Show and Shine

Today was a press day, and final prep day for the start of the rayce tomorrow. All the teams had their cars displayed, recharging their batteries, tweaking bits and procedures, meeting and greeting other teams in a more relaxed moment, and shaking hands with VIP's.

Comments thrown at the Red River Team included;

-"Best array I've ever seen,"
-"Solid for a rookie car,"
-"Great support fleet,"
-and many variations of "That body looks sweet!"

All directed at the deserving team members of this outstanding first-year effort from the most unlikely school.

The relaxation moment only lasted a moment though. After the organizer's meeting with the teams, clarifying the rules and safety protocols, the r3 Solar Car Team was reminded of the seriousness of their current situation. The pressure sunk in and they gathered to tweak their strategies and prepare for Rayce Day 1. Not only can disorganization and miscommunication lead to a bad result, it can also lead to a bad accident. With the nature of the competition, danger is never far away.

The pressure to perform can be felt more than ever. Let's rayce!

Dean again

Hey Eugene! Your interview beside the array was on the national CTV news last night! Seen by millions! I knew I should have asked for an autograph before you became famous.

Dean

p.s. I like all the comments about the car. They said nothing I didn't already know but it is nice to hear it from other people. Good work team.

Tuesday, July 19, 10:00 a.m.:

On Sunday, the team started off the race in fine form, keeping up to the seasoned competition. Unfortunately, after 118 miles of the 212-mile leg, rain caused a few electrical problems and the Red River Raycer was trailered to the first stage stop.

The team shouldn't be discouraged. This is an amazing achievement! Fifty-one teams signed up for the North American Solar Challenge but only 27 made it to the qualifying stage in Austin, Texas. Of these, only 20 raycers made it to the start line. After the first day, another 2 teams pulled out of the race, leaving Red River College competing in a field against 17 elite universities.

On Monday, July 18th, the Red River Raycer logged another 65 miles on the way to Winnipeg, still experiencing malfunctions in the array, most likely caused by wet conditions. The team is not alone. Two others, McMaster University and the University of Illinois, are battling it out behind the leading pack.

Currently, the battery is charging with only 2 amps but 5 are needed to continue at a decent pace. Hopefully, with sunny conditions, the car will dry out and achieve its maximum capability.

With every mile traveled, the Red River Raycer sets a new distance record. Way to go team!
